Despite the measures of social isolation, preventive and compulsory, the parents of children and adolescents in Argentina never waited with such eagerness for the Winter Break like this year.

It happens that for almost the entire first semester they have been serving as “assistants” of teachers so that their children do not miss the year and can complete the tasks of the booklets distributed by the national government or those required by teachers from classes virtual.

Parents who worked side by side with housework, protection from the COVID-19 pandemic, and who assisted in the education of their children are counting down the days for two weeks winter break in which, at least, they will not have to “do the homework”.

At the beginning of the social isolation measures, when the schools were closed for the first time, it was speculated that, due to changes that were going to be made in the school calendar so that children and young people did not miss the year, they were going to remove entirely the winter holidays.

But the Minister of Education, Nicolás Trotta, came out on more than one occasion to clarify the situation. He ratified that the elimination of winter holidays is not being considered at any of the educational levels.

He considered that “it is contradictory” to think about it when teachers “are working so hard” with distance learning in the face of the coronavirus pandemic. “We know the enormous social cost of isolation, but these are not educational decisions, but epidemiological decisions. The value of life is above all things,” the minister explained in April.

Official 2020 calendar: changes from holidays

As every year, the two weeks of vacation are not given in all the provinces equally.

According to official school calendar for 2020, the first provinces to enter winter vacations should be Chubut, La Rioja, Mendoza and Neuquén. There the winter holidays will be from July 6 to 17 of the same month.

This was due to the fact that Mendoza and Chubut were also among the first to start the school year; they did it on February 26. In La Rioja and Neuquén classes began on March 2, along with another important group of provinces. So they also planned to have their winter break earlier.
