Caracas, Jul 4 (EFE) .- Venezuela reached 6,750 cases of coronavirus this Saturday, a total that has left 62 deaths in the 111 days that the pandemic has been in the country, reported the Minister of Communication, Jorge Rodríguez.
“We have 62 compatriots who died of COVID-19 infection,” said the minister, presenting the daily balance of the pandemic that included three deaths and 213 new infections registered in the last 24 hours.
Of the new infected, he explained, 136 are the product of “community transmission” which resulted in 30 infected in the Andean state of Mérida, 18 in Caracas, 5 in Zulia (west, bordering Colombia) and 3 in Miranda, near the Venezuelan capital.
The minister drew attention to the Yaracuy (west) and Sucre (east) states, which added 41 and 26 new infections, respectively, in the last 24 hours, almost all related to outbreaks detected in popular markets.
He also pointed out that of the total of the 77th day they are “imported” infections, as the Executive of Nicolás Maduro describes Venezuelans who return to the country infected and who are held for weeks at land borders.
Those “international” patients, he explained, come from Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, and Peru, while six of them were counted in this line because they were Venezuelans who within the country had contact with travelers who were infected.
A 67-year-old carpenter from Caracas and a 52-year-old man who lived in Bolívar state (south, bordering Brazil) were two of the deaths recorded. The third was a 68-year-old man from Falcón state (northwest) who, in addition to coronavirus infection, had hypertension, diabetes and obesity.
Rodríguez noted that after 16 weeks of pandemic in the South American country, 81% of patients are people under the age of 49, so he called on young people to be prudent and comply with measures of confinement and social distancing.
