The closure will be by river, air and sea, as reported by President Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou at a press conference. The country already has 29 infected

After reporting that the total number of positive cases in Uruguay reached 29 cases, President Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou announced the total closure of the border with Argentina.

The closure will be river, air and sea, according to the president in a press conference as reported by the newspaper El País.

The closure will start at 00:00 on Tuesday, March 17 and freight traffic is excluded.

In this context, this means that a 495-kilometer river border border marked by the Uruguay River and connected by a series of international bridges and ferry services will be closed.

This measure was taken in tune with the President Alberto Fernández, after observing that many Europeans stranded in Argentina due to the restrictions taken by the Argentine president, traveled to the neighboring country to then be able to fly to their countries, reported The Observer.

Lacalle Pou also referred to the positive cases in Uruguay, which have already reached 29, after the first four were announced on Friday.

According to the president, all were in stable conditions and in their respective homes, he said.

It had previously announced the partial closure of borders, which consisted of a mandatory 14-day quarantine for people from the countries most affected by the pandemic.

As for Argentina, the number of infected already adds up to 65, of which two died.

Asked about the borders with Brazil, the president explained that in the case of that neighboring country it is “more complex” because there is a “dry border” and many people who lead “binational” lives.

In addition, he stated that the foreign ministers of Brazil and Uruguay are coordinating measures, while at the border points where there are customs points, a sanitary protocol will be implemented. On the other hand, the mayors of the departments that share the border with Brazil are in contact with the prefects of that country to coordinate measures.
