UEFA postpones next week’s Champions League and Europa League matches

UEFA took an important step this Friday by delaying all Champions League and Europa League matches next week due to the spread of the coronavirus.

“In line with decisions made by various governments, all UEFA club competition matches scheduled for next week are postponed,” the European confederation announced in a statement.

The move involves the second leg matches of the last four round of 16 matches in the Champions League, Tuesday and Wednesday, and the round of 16 second leg of the Europa League on Thursday.

In fact, the matches of Champions Juventus-Lyon and Manchester City-Real Madrid, scheduled on Tuesday, had already been postponed on Thursday due to the quarantine to which the players of the Italian and Spanish teams are subjected.

By Wednesday Bayern-Chelsea were to be played behind closed doors and Barcelona-Naples seemed destined to be canceled due to the suspension by the Spanish authorities of all flights from Italy.

The UEFA decision follows the movement of the national championships, already suspended in Italy, Spain and France, while England will decide this Friday and Germany will propose a suspension on Monday, although it would keep the games this weekend, behind closed doors.

On Tuesday, March 17, UEFA will organize a video conference meeting with all the federations to discuss the situation, which threatens the dispute of Euro 2020, from June 12 to July 12 in 12 countries on the continent.

The coronavirus epidemic has caused at least 4,958 deaths worldwide since its appearance in December, according to an AFP balance with official sources at 09:00 GMT on Friday.
