The United States recorded a new record of coronavirus infections with more than 52,000 cases in the last 24 hours

The United States recorded 52,898 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, a record number for one day, according to an independent count by Johns Hopkins University. Thus, the total number of positive cases in the country amounts to 2,682,270, by far the highest globally. The number of deaths in the last 24 hours, meanwhile, was 706. The balance of this Wednesday exceeded the previous record of new cases in the country, registered on June 26 with 45,255.

The average of new daily cases in the United States has been above 40,000 since last week, largely due to the rebound in southern and western states like Florida, Texas, California and Arizona.

New York, however, still remains the worst hit state in the United States by the pandemic with 394,079 confirmed cases and 32,043 deaths, a figure just below Brazil, the United Kingdom and Italy.

In New York City alone, 23,104 people have died. New York is followed by neighboring New Jersey with 15,078 deaths, Massachusetts with 8,053 and Illinois with 6,951.

Other states with a large number of deaths are Pennsylvania with 6,684, Michigan with 6,198, California with 6,152 or Connecticut with 4,324.

In terms of infections, California is the second state only behind New York with 233,692. Due to the significant increase in cases, Governor Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday that the state would drastically back down on its reopening.

Indoor activities of Restaurants, cinemas, museums, warehouses and other businesses in confined spaces will be banned for at least three weeks. in 19 state counties, Newsom announced.

All bars and breweries, whether open or closed, will also need to close their doors in affected counties, which include the highly populated Los Angeles and Orange counties, as well as the state capital, Sacramento.

“These 19 counties represent over 70% of the population in the state of California,” Newsom said at a virtual press conference. “We are focusing our efforts on closing indoor operations.”

Also, ahead of the July 4 holiday, United States Independence Day, Los Angeles announced that it would close all the beaches from Friday to Monday to avoid the large crowds that characterize this celebration..

The same measure was taken by the Florida authorities, which has also become one of the new epicenters of the pandemic. The authorities of the southern counties, the most populated, they have gone further and announced new restrictions with a view to preventing the homeland date from becoming a new catalyst for the disease.

On Tuesday, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Giménez announced that restaurants will not be able to serve alcohol after midnight. On Wednesday, he expanded the measure and ordered that these establishments should close their doors at midnight – something absolutely unusual in a region characterized by being the only ones in the country where it is customary to go out until the wee hours of the morning.

To this is added that, by means of an executive order, Hotels are prohibited from having their pools open between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. between July 3 and 6.

Nationally, the provisional balance of deceased -128,028- has already exceeded the lowest level of the initial estimates of the White House, which projected at best between 100,000 and 240,000 deaths due to the pandemic.

For its part, the Institute of Health Metrics and Assessments (IHME) of the University of Washington, whose models for predicting the evolution of the pandemic are often set by the White House, estimates that the United States will arrive in October with about 175,000 dead.
