The elephant Mara is already in Brazil and started the last leg of her trip to Mato Grosso


The elephant mara and the team that accompanies it successfully carried out the immigration procedures in the Customs Office of Foz de Iguazú, after making contact with the technical team of the Elephant Sanctuary. In this way, she began the last leg of her journey that will take her to her final destination in Chapada dos Guimarães.

The trip is going better than we had stipulated, and if everything continues like this, in the next few hours he would already be in his new home, “said Alejandro Macchiavelli, secretary of the environment for the city.

Mara began her journey this Saturday afternoon when she voluntarily entered the transfer box, and after an emotional farewell to the technical and professional staff of the Buenos Aires Ecopark, she left on Sarmiento Avenue.

The elephant he travels awake and cannot leave the compartment at any time. It is permanently monitored by the technical team that keeps you company, talks to you and provides you with food and water. Every two or three hours, the truck that moves her stops to check her condition. On the way he fed on his usual diet: watermelon, alfalfa, pear, carrots, and complementary nutrition.

At the end of the customs formalities, the team of veterinarians and caretakers said goodbye to Mara and handed the documentation and monitoring to the team of the Elephant Sanctuary, who will accompany her on her journey through the routes of Brazil, and in her final destination.

From the Ministry of Environment of the City reported that throughout the trip the protocol for the prevention of contagion is active, where the risk against the pandemic due to the coronavirus.

Mara was the unique asian elephant of the Buenos Aires Ecopark. He shared his room with two African elephants, Kuky and Pupy, born in the Kruger Park.
