The Spanish government reported 517 new deaths from coronavirus, 102 less than those reported on Sunday, thus the downward trend was resumed after several weeks of quarantine and on the day in which economic activity is partially reopened.
The total number of fatalities reached 17,489, with which Spain remains the third country with the most deaths, behind the US and Italy, according to the official records of each government.
For his part, cases increased by 3,477, about 700 less than the report the day before, for a total of 169,496. It is a 2.05% daily advance, the slowest expansion of the coronavirus since the start of the outbreak in the country. On the eve, the figure had been 2.6%, and although on Sundays and Mondays they usually present low figures due to the “weekend” effect that delays the unification of reports, a weekly average remains below 5%, when at the end of March it was around 15% and had peaks above 20 percent.
Meanwhile, the number of discharged patients grew by 2,336, bringing the total to 64,727.
Many Spaniards resume work this Monday, and non-essential businesses may reopen after two weeks of economic “hibernation”. Fearing a spike in contagion, the government announced that it would distribute 10 million masks to people forced to take public transportation to return to work.
“We are all eager to recover relations, to go out into the streets (…), but the desire is even greater to win this war, to avoid a relapse,” said Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
“This return to certain activities is not synonymous with relaxation and that is why the police will continue to carry out mobility controls, we are not going to let our guard down,” announced María Pilar, commissioner of the National Police.
