Barcelona (Spain), Jul 4 (EFE) .- Spain begins this weekend the summer holidays with the health system on alert for outbreaks of coronavirus, around fifty in the whole country, with the focus on the Catalan province of Lérida, whose capital and its surroundings will be confined from this Saturday.
The Catalan Government, which has the powers of health, today decreed the confinement of the area, with some 210,000 inhabitants, due to the increase in cases of coronavirus, with which the entrances and exits in the affected territory will be restricted, meetings are prohibited of more than ten people, in private and public spaces and visits to nursing homes.
This province in the north of Spain was one of the first to register outbreaks of COVID-19 linked, most of them, to seasonal farm workers, at a time when summer fruit was collected in that area.
The region has registered eight outbreaks, with more than 4,000 positives, 356 new infections in the last week, and people with coronaviruses admitted to the hospital in Lleida tripled in the last ten days.
According to the Catalan Prime Minister Quim Torra said today, they decided to confinement due to “too great a growth in cases of contagion.”
The mobility restrictions affect the exits and entrances of workers in the region and the transport of business and economic activities, although movements by motorways and highways that cross the area will be allowed, provided they are not from or to Lérida and its surroundings.
In addition to this Catalan province, there are also numerous outbreaks in Andalusia (13), most in the province of Granada, although there are outbreaks in almost all Spanish regions.
This Friday, the focus was on the Community of Madrid, the region most affected by the pandemic, when announcing its first outbreak, with five positives.
Since Spain ended the measures to restrict mobility on June 21, after more than three months of limitations, the appearance of coronavirus boats was the main concern of the health authorities, who insist on the need to use marks, maintain social distance and follow hand hygiene.
Spain has registered 28,385 deaths since the start of the pandemic, with 250,545.contagios, according to official figures.
