Lisbon, Jul 5 (EFE) .- The Portuguese right-hander Mário Coelho died today in his hometown of Vila Franca de Xira at 84 years of age, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The bullfighter, one of the most outstanding in the history of Portuguese bullfighting, had been hospitalized in the Vila Franca de Xira hospital since June 26.
The matador began his career as a brilliant silver man, especially in the gang of the Zamorano bullfighter Andrés Vázquez, although he was also a junior of Santiago Martín “El Viti” or Luis Miguel Dominguín.
Antonio Bienvenida himself encouraged him, when he was a banderillero, to forge himself as a bullfighter, a profession in which he later shone in the rings of Europe and America.
After the sticks, he took the alternative in the Badajoz ring in 1967 and remained a matador for 23 years.
Paquirri, Paco Camino, Manzanares or Capea were some of his cartel partners.
The Vila Franca de Xira City Council today expresses its condolences on the official bullfighter’s death on the official website, calling it “one of the greatest names in bullfighting culture.”
