Mexico suspends soccer tournament until further notice due to coronavirus

MEXICO CITY, Mar 15 (Reuters) – The Mexico League announced on Sunday the indefinite suspension of the Closing soccer tournament of the first division for men and women, in addition to the promotion, due to the worldwide spread of the coronavirus that has infected more than 150,000 people and has killed more than 5,000.

In Mexico, the spread of the coronavirus has infected 41 people.

“The executive presidency of Liga MX, in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health of the Federal Government, has decided to suspend all matches in the tournament for the first division, promotion and women’s league,” the agency reported.

“The measure will continue until further notice and the resumption of activities will be determined in coordination with the Ministry of Health of the Federal Government,” he added.

The League clarified that the measure will be applied at the end of the tenth day, which is played without an audience and that ends at night with the match between America and Cruz Azul.

The last time Mexican soccer was suspended occurred in 2017, when the tenth day of the Apertura tournament was postponed due to the earthquake that struck Mexico on September 19 of that year. On that occasion, the tournament only stopped for a week.
