Mexico, Jul 3 (EFE) .- Mexico touched 30,000 deaths on Friday due to COVID-19 and exceeded 245,000 infections by adding 654 deaths and 6,740 confirmed cases in the last 24 hours, Mexican health authorities reported
With the 654 deaths, Mexico reached 29,843 from the 29,189 reported on Thursday, while the 6,740 confirmed cases registered a cumulative of 245,251 cases, from 238,511 the day before.
The cases reported on this day exceeded, by just one case, the 6,741 infections that were registered this Thursday, July 2, while the third highest figure was the 6,288 infections that were registered on June 23.
“In the last 24 hours, 6,740 new cases were confirmed, which represents an increase of 2.8% compared to the previous day,” said the director of Epidemiology of the Mexican Government, José Luis Alomía.
Alomia recalled that in total in Mexico 624,987 have undergone studies and in addition to the 245,251 accumulated confirmed cases there are 77,750 suspected cases and 301,986 negative ones.
He noted that there are 26,063 active cases, which acquired the disease in the last 14 days and are the ones who keep the epidemic active.
In addition, he explained that 60% of people confirmed by coronavirus have successfully recovered.
Regarding the total deaths, the official noted 2,169 are waiting for results to confirm the cause of death and said that the global case fatality rate is 4.8%.
Alomía pointed out that the states with the highest number of active cases are Mexico City, the state of Mexico, Guanajuato, Nuevo León and Puebla, while those with the highest number of deaths are Mexico City and State, Baja California, Veracruz and Puebla.
In addition, he said that to this day there are a total of 28,395 beds for general care, of which 15,808 are available and 12,587 are occupied.
Regarding the number of tests, Alomia commented that there are 221,781 PCR tests available to be applied throughout the country.
Mexico is in its fifth week of the stage called “new normal” that operates based on an epidemiological traffic light that marks the risk of contagion.
This traffic light is an instrument that generates the alert so that the population knows the risk of catching this disease and ranges from the maximum level (red), high (orange), medium (yellow) and low (green).
On this matter, the general director of Health Promotion, Ricardo Cortés, reported that for the week of July 6 to 12, 15 states of Mexico will be in the red color of the epidemiological traffic light and the other 17 will implement the color orange.
Cortés pointed out that moving from red to orange or vice versa, at the epidemiological traffic light “does not mean leaving everyone at home” and recommended being very careful when carrying out essential activities, “we must all take care of ourselves.”
Under the red light, hotels can have 25% occupancy, restaurants can only sell take-away food, and beauty salons, barbershops and hairdressers only receive appointments and parks open to 25% of capacity.
At orange traffic lights, hotels increase their capacity to 50% as well as restaurant occupancy, while parks and hairdressers and shopping malls can also have 50% occupancy.
