Mexican Baseball League delays season opener due to coronavirus

MEXICO CITY, Mar 14 (Reuters) – The Mexican Baseball League (LMB) will delay the start of the 2020 regular season and suspended training for all teams due to the spread of the coronavirus, which has spread to more than 100 countries infecting 153,864 people and causing at least 5,800 deaths.

In Mexico, the spread of the coronavirus has infected 41 people.

“The preseason for all the teams that make up our circuit is officially suspended and the start of the 2020 season is postponed to Monday, May 11, 2020,” the LMB said in a statement on Saturday.

The regular season was scheduled to start on April 6.

The LMB made the decision after the undersecretary of Health, Hugo López-Gatell, said that the Mexican government recommended the temporary suspension of events that gather more than 5,000 people, as part of a “healthy distance” campaign to minimize contagions.

“We cannot hide that these provisions have an economic impact on each of our clubs, however, our best interest is to safeguard the health and integrity of all those who are part of the baseball community in our country and society in general” added the LMB.

The main soccer leagues in the world and various sporting events have been suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, the soccer tournament in Mexico continues to be played with matches without an audience.
