Contacts of older people may need to be kept at a limited level until the end of the year to protect them from the new coronavirus, European Union (EU) President Ursula von der Leyen said in comments published Sunday.
“Without a vaccine, we have to limit contact with the elderly as much as possible,” especially those who live in special homes, he told the German daily Bild circulating on Sunday.
“I know it is difficult and that isolation is a burden, but it is a matter of life and death. We must be disciplined and patient.”
“Children and young people will enjoy more freedom of movement than older people and those with pre-existing medical conditions,” said the German leader, who expressed confidence that a European laboratory will develop a vaccine by the end of the year.
“To ensure that people can be vaccinated quickly, we already have discussions with producers about global production capabilities,” he added.
