Ten Magellanic penguins returned to the sea on the beaches of San Clemente, after having been rehabilitated. When they were rescued everyone presented pictures of malnutrition, dehydration, anemia, hypothermia and high degree of parasitosis.
They were found in the towns of Pinamar, Villa Gesell, Mar de Ajó and San Clemente del Tuyú, in November and December 2019 and in February this year.
This species, which according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is “almost threatened”, migrates between the end of March and the beginning of April from the Patagonia of our country to warmer latitudes and can reach Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil.
“These animals have gregarious behavior, so we must wait until there are a minimum number of recovered to be able reinsert them as a group. They spend a lot of time in the water, so if they appear alone on the beach it is a bad sign. Unfortunately, on their migratory journey when they did not find enough food, they starved to our shores with hypothermia and malnutrition symptoms, ”explained Sergio Rodríguez Heredia, biologist and head of the Rescue Center of the Mundo Marino Foundation.
Upon entering the rescue center, the first measure to assist these animals should be hydration. “We supply them with water with vitamins, proteins and sugars. Once they recover the adequate level of hydration, they are given a formula with water and liquefied fish. The next step, if they tolerate it, is to offer them fish in pieces and, finally, whole fish, ”explained Ignacio Peña, a veterinary doctor.
