Frank Williams, creator of one of the most iconic teams in Formula 1 in 1977, died at the age of 79. As confirmed by his team through a statement, “fhe was peacefully surrounded by his family“.

The Williams team is one of the most awarded in the history of Formula 1, with seven world championships for drivers (1980, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1993, 1996 and 1997), while it also won another nine from manufacturers (1980, 1981, 1986, 1987, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996 and 1997).

In March 1986, his life took a radical turn when he suffered a spinal injury that left him quadriplegic while returning from a test in Paul Ricard, France.

The team founded by Williams had marked the Argentine public in the early 1980s, as Carlos Reutemann fought until the last race in the 1981 season with one of his cars and lost by just one point against Brazilian Nelson Piquet.

Jost Capito, current head of the Williams team, acknowledged that “we are truly saddened by the passing of our founder Sir Frank Williams”, and continued: “He was a legend and an icon of our sport. His passing marks the end of an era for our team and for the sport of Formula 1 “.
