Bolsonaro’s striking request to overcome the pandemic

The President of Brazil had considered Covid-19 as a “flu” and repeatedly spoke out against social isolation.

The President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, He invited this Saturday to a national religious fast for the country to overcome the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic that already leaves more than 430 dead and exceeds 10,000 cases.

The call, announced by Bolsonaro since Thursday, was reinforced this Saturday with a video released on social networks where the president and several pastors invite the Brazilian people to participate in the “greatest campaign of fasting and prayer seen in the history of Brazil” .

With a duration of just over four minutes, the video, published on the president’s Facebook page, is narrated by an announcer who assures that “the greatest evangelical leaders in this country have responded to the holy proclamation made by the supreme chief of the nation, President Jair Messias Bolsonaro “

According to the recording, called the “army of Christ for the greatest campaign of fasting and prayer ever seen in the country”reproduced the EFE news agency.

In a mix of images and testimonies of pastors, the video also takes up verses from the Bible that allude to God as the great warrior and asks that the recording be shared and disclosed so that more people join in prayer on Sunday.

Bolsonaro’s call to pray for the pandemic comes at a time when his image has declined markedly in the country for considering Covid-19 as a “flu” and repeatedly demonstrating against social isolation, recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), as a way to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

The president, who defends the reopening of shops and that those under 40 return to the streets to “look for bread”, has minimized the severity of the pandemic and has been criticizing the management of his Minister of Health, Luiz Henrique Mandetta, who insist on confinement.

This led to the approval of the Minister of Health in the face of the coronavirus crisis, according to the Datafolha firm, rose this week to 76%, more than double that of the president, who barely reached 33%, according to Télam.
