MADRID, 6 (EUROPA PRESS)
The Indian Ministry of Health has reported that 24,248 new cases of coronavirus have been registered in the last day, so there are already 697,413 infections accumulated in the country, surpassing Russia, with just over 680,000, as the third most affected by the pandemic.
On the eve, India had already reached its highest number of cases in a single day when it counted 24,850 infections and 613 deaths. On this occasion, the death toll has been 425, so the total amounts to 19,693. Of the 697,413 cases, 253,287 remain active and 424,432 correspond to people who have managed to overcome the disease, according to authorities.
On the other hand, more than half of the infections that have been detected in India are concentrated in three densely populated territories, Maharashtra, with 206,619; Tamil Nadu, with 111,151; and Delhi, whose authorities have put the number of cases at 99,444. In addition, the increase in cases in other areas of the south of the country, such as Telangana and Karnataka, has also contributed to the expansion of the coronavirus.
On Sunday, a total of seven states reported for the first time that more than 1,000 cases had been found in a single day, including Assam, in the northeast of the country, whose last 1,202 infections have been the largest peak in the region, as expressed by its own Governor, Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Thus, at a rampant rate of more than 20,000 cases a day, the situation has worsened markedly, especially after the reopening of shopping centers, offices and places of worship just over a month ago.
This has prompted Indian authorities to back down and cancel the reopening of the Taj Mahal, which will remain closed until further notice due to the rebound in cases in the northern city of Agra. Other monuments and tourist attractions will remain closed to the public for now.
Although India is now the third country with the highest number of those infected in the pandemic behind the United States and Brazil, it is the eighth with the highest number of deaths due to COVID-19.
