Amazon is launching RxPass in the US, a new Prime member-exclusive drug subscription that charges users a $5 monthly fee to ship eligible prescription drugs to their doorstep. Announced in a press release Tuesday, the Amazon RxPass subscription program provides generic drugs to treat more than 80 common health conditions, including high blood pressure, hair loss, anxiety and acid reflux.
The $5 fee includes delivery charges and is added to Prime customers’ existing monthly subscription fees. RxPass fees are flat and do not increase even if users need multiple prescriptions each month. Medications can be dispensed on a monthly or quarterly basis depending on prescription requirements. Conditions covered by the service also include allergies, diabetes (excluding insulin) and anemia. Amazon says more than 150 million Americans are already taking one or more of the drugs available through RxPass. A complete list of generic drugs covered by the RxPass subscription is available on the Amazon Pharmacy website.
Customers enrolled in government programs like Medicare and Medicaid are not eligible for RxPass
Amazon has launched several health services in recent years. The company shut down its original Amazon Care telehealth program (launched in 2019) in November last year in favor of its new Amazon Clinic telehealth service. RxPass subscriptions are exempt from Amazon Pharmacy – an affordable online pharmacy exclusive to Prime members that launched in 2020.
The RxPass subscription service is available today in most US states. Amazon has not announced whether it will expand the drug list or if it plans to expand the service outside of the United States. Customers enrolled in Medicare, Medicaid, or any other government healthcare program are not eligible for RxPass, but can still use government insurance to fill prescriptions at Amazon Pharmacy.
