Tennis.-The Mutua Madrid Open 2020, permanently suspended

The organizers of the Mutua Madrid Open have confirmed this Tuesday that this year’s edition, scheduled for between September 12 and 20, will not be finally disputed, a decision taken as “an exercise of responsibility” in the face of the difficult situation derived from the last weeks due to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.

“In an exercise of responsibility with the current situation caused by COVID-19, and after carefully evaluating the circumstances that the pandemic continues to cause with the competent authorities, the Mutua Madrid Open 2020 will not be held this year after being relocated on the calendar from September 12 to 20, “said the organization of the ATP Masters 1,000 category tournament.

In principle, the tournament led by Feliciano López was scheduled in its traditional location for the month of May, from 1 to 10, but the confinement due to the pandemic forced to seek a new date with ATP and WTA, which they set in the third week of September. .

Last Saturday, the Community of Madrid recommended that the tournament not be held, but left the decision to the organization. The Deputy Minister of Public Health, Antonio Zapatero, sent a letter to the director of the tournament, the tennis player Feliciano López, in which he informed him that it was “inadvisable” for it to be held due to the “health risk that it would entail both for the public and for the organization and the players. “

Despite the fact that in recent months the organization has created “different action protocols to guarantee the safety” of all the participants, they have finally decided to accept the advice of the authorities. “Following the recommendations of the local health authorities, and after monitoring the situation for months, the organizers of the Mutua Madrid Open have been forced to cancel the tournament due to the difficult situation that COVID-19 continues to create at all levels”, Indian.

Furthermore, and after a significant increase in COVID-19 cases, the Community of Madrid announced a few days ago a series of new measures to control the spread of the virus, including the reduction of social gatherings to 10 people, both in publicly and privately, making the viability of holding the tournament more difficult, “he added.

The tennis player Feliciano López, director of the Mutua Madrid Open, regretted that he will not finally be able to compete. “We have done our part to celebrate the tournament. After the first cancellation in May, we got down to business with the date of September with the hope of having top level tennis at the Caja Mágica this year so bad for everyone, “he said.

“However, instability is still too high to hold a tournament like this with all the guarantees. Once again, we have to thank the Madrid City Council and all our sponsors and suppliers for being by our side in all the steps that we have been giving, “he concluded.

In this way, the next edition of the Mutua Madrid Open will take place “from April 30 to May 9, 2021” at the Caja Mágica, according to the organization. Fans who decided to keep their tickets after the postponement of May have them “guaranteed” for 2021 with the same location and session.
