Coronavirus in Argentina | Winter break: what’s going to happen with the calendar and back to school

The coronavirus pandemic “altered “the school year in Argentina. Classes were suspended and parents, students and managers embarked on the complex task of supporting distance education.

After almost 100 days of quarantine, the winter holidays are approaching and with the July break questions arise: When will the boys return to the classroom ?; Will the calendar be modified ?; Will knowledge lost during this period be recovered?

Sources of the Ministry of Education of the Nation ratified than they hope that 85% of the country can return to the classrooms after the winter holidays, that is, on August 3. For this, the portfolio directed by Nicolás Trotta awaits the result of a series of epidemiological studies that will be known in mid-July and will allow for an x-ray of each region of the country.

Authorities have ruled out returning to classes in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA) due to the significant number of those infected.

Alone Phase 5 provinces may allow students to return to classes. “The priority is the health of the children, their families and the teachers and directors,” they explained. There will be no community circulation of the virus in that district. The Advisory Council of the Ministry of Education works on a sanitary protocol, but the details of the document are kept confidential.

2020 calendar, for the moment, will not be modified. In this way, each province will respect the stipulated dates for the winter holidays of July.

At the end of 2019, the Federal Council of Education established that the school year begins on March 2 and ends in mid-December.

Córdoba was the first province to ratify its winter holidays, which will take place between July 13 and 24 of that month. The Buenos Aires province will do the same of the July 20 to 31, like the city and Jujuy, among other examples. The sources consulted assured that until now no district asked to modify the dates of the winter recess.

The Ministry conducts a pedagogical evaluation of distance education during the pandemic. “We know that children do not learn in the same way as if they were in the classroom and we need to have a clear picture of the points to reinforce when they fly to class,” they explain.

In this sense, the authorities explain that the knowledge that could not have been incorporated into this school year, will be “prorated” in 2021. In the case of young people who are in their last year of high school, agreements are worked with universities to reinforce knowledge before formally starting the first year of their degree.

“It seeks to close 14 years of compulsory education and that, in turn, the entrance to the faculty is not delayed,” they clarify. In this sense, young people who finish school in 2020 will only have one month of vacation, in January, since these reinforcement courses will begin in February.
