Mexico experienced terror when at 10:30 in the morning of this June 23, the state of Oaxaca registered a 7.5-degree earthquake that was felt in various parts of the country, including Mexico City (CDMX). Although in the course of the day there were some minor aftershocks, around 21:00 hours an earthquake occurred whose magnitude reached 5.5 degrees.
The earthquake occurred in the municipality of San Pedro Pochutla and was located 31 kilometers southwest of this town, exactly at latitude 15.48 and longitude -96.57, with a depth of eight kilometers, according to information from the National Seismological Service (SSN)
For his part, Mexican Seismic Warning System (Sasmex) announced that there was no alert for this eventuality because the energy did not exceed the preset for its activation.
Earthquake detected on Jun 23, 20 at 9:33:26 PM. NO SEISMIC ALERT WARNED because the energy estimate in the first seconds did not exceed the preset levels. Nearby sensor: Oaxaca coast in Puerto Ángel
In the detailed report of the earthquake, Sasmex explained that this was recorded by nine sensor stations, but that did not warrant a warning in the capital of the country “because the energy of the developing earthquake, allowed to forecast a minor seismic effect in the City”.
The stations that identified the telluric movement are in the municipalities of Puerto Ángel, Tonameca, Tangolunda, Cieneguilla, La Virgen, Sola de Vega,
For an earthquake to warrant seismic alert, it is necessary that at least two of the seismic stations record energy levels higher than those established for each city. Earthquakes are also not eligible for an alert when they take place very far from the Sasmex coverage area.
At 10:30 a.m., Mexico experienced minutes of terror due to the 7.5 tremor it had epicenter in the municipality of Crucecita 12 kilometers southwest of the town. Specifically, it arose at a latitude of 15.68 and longitude -96.07 with a depth of 10 kilometers.
Due to its magnitude, it was noticeable in Mexico City with a duration of approximately one minute. In addition the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the United States (NOAA, for its acronym in English) issued an alert for possible tsunami, which at this time has already ceased.
In addition to the capital, this movement it was also noticeable in states like Guerrero, Chiapas, Michoacán, Morelos and Tabasco.
