The State Department warned at the time of the risk of bat trials being conducted in the Wuhan laboratory.
The United States Government issued an alert two years ago about the risk to the world of bat coronavirus tests by Chinese scientists in a laboratory in Wuhan.
Precisely, that would have been the birthplace of the pandemic that has left more than 125,000 dead worldwide and almost two million infected by Covid 19.
In January 2018, Chinese authorities allowed American scientists to enter the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which houses the world’s first Level 4 biosecurity laboratory.
What US officials discovered during their visit to Wuhan alarmed them enough to send two cables to Washington alerting about the biological security risks posed by laboratory coronavirus experiments.
The Washington Post revealed the content of the cables on Wednesday. The first of them warned US authorities that the lab’s work on bat coronaviruses and their possible human transmission posed a risk of a new pandemic similar to that of SARS..
“We note that the new laboratory has a severe shortage of properly trained technicians and researchers necessary to operate this high containment laboratory safely,” an official from the environment, science and health department of the US embassy in Beijing said on 19 January 2018.
“The researchers also showed that several SARS-like coronaviruses can interact with ACE2, the human receptor identified for the SARS coronavirus. This finding suggests that SARS-like bat coronaviruses can be transmitted to humans to cause SARS-like diseases.” added the statement.
China fooled the world?
The disclosure of these cables reinforces the theory that the coronavirus may have been created in the Wuhan lab, located 10 kilometers from the seafood market where China claims the Covid-19 outbreak began last December.
Beijing had designated that Wuhan market as the cradle of the epidemic, claiming that the virus would have been transmitted from one animal species to another, before contaminating humans..
“We now know that live animals sold in a fish market are the source of the virus,” the head of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Gao Fu, said in late January after the quarantine of Wuhan.
The virus responsible for the disease COVID-19 “was unknown before the epidemic outbreak that started in Wuhan in December 2019,” recalls the World Health Organization (WHO)
The Chinese authorities have been accused of hiding the epidemic at its beginning. Wuhan Police have indeed rebuked doctors who have alerted since December.
The death of one of these doctors generated in February an unprecedented movement of rage on social networks against the regime of President Xi Jinping.
