Coronavirus infections grow exponentially, deaths approach 50,000: WHO

GENEVA, Apr 1 (Reuters) – The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) expressed deep concern on Wednesday about “the rapid acceleration and global spread” of infections with the new coronavirus, which has now reached 205 countries and territories.

“In the past five weeks there has been almost exponential growth in the number of new cases and the number of deaths has more than doubled last week,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, in a video conference in Geneva.

“In the next few days we will reach 1 million confirmed cases and 50,000 deaths worldwide,” said Tedros.
