SANTIAGO, Mar 16 (Reuters) – Chilean soccer leaders announced on Monday the suspension from this week of the local tournament due to the advance of the coronavirus in the country, where more than a hundred cases have already been registered.

The measure will take effect from Wednesday for the first division and second division championships, the leadership said in a statement. The highest category of women’s football will also stop its activities.

“The National Association of Professional Soccer has determined the suspension of professional league and women’s soccer competitions for a period of 14 days, starting on Wednesday, March 18, 2020,” ANFP said in a statement.

On the last day, the country doubled to 155 confirmed cases of the disease and expects the curve of infected to accelerate in the coming days.

The Chilean government had ordered last Thursday that all soccer matches be played without an audience for a month starting on March 18.
