The Uruguayan Ministry of Public Health confirmed the first cases of coronavirus in the country. They are two people from Montevideo and two others from Salto.

The portfolio stated on its Twitter account that the four cases correspond to people “from Milan” who entered Uruguay between March 3 and 6. “The patients are stable and at home”, they point out.

Until now, Uruguay was the only country in South America that had no confirmed cases of coronavirus.

This Friday an emergency meeting of the National Emergency System is called, together with the mayors of the 19 departments and all the ministers.

After the meeting, the Executive will announce new measures to take to prevent the spread of the virus.

The Minister of Public Health, Daniel Salinas, had indicated days ago that Uruguay “now has diagnostic capacity and updated clinical treatment guidelines according to the global standards recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).”

All the cases that reach the mutual system and are considered suspects of coronavirus by the treating doctors are derived and centralized in the Public Health Virology Laboratory where, with the corresponding kits, they determine if the person actually has Covid-19 or not.

After confirming the first cases of coronavirus in Uruguay, the National Emergency System (Sinae) recalled in its Twitter account the general prevention measures for Covid-19.
